Doorway to a time long ago…

The painters finally got around to painting our front door and we couldn’t be happier with the result.

Black may seem an odd choice. After all, why would anyone want such an austere colour, especially one that absorbs the heat of Australian afternoon sun on our south-western facing facade.

The black door for us is a reminder of our time in London, where we spent a few short years enjoying life, work, culture, European travel and the great city of London itself.

Black doors in London are a common sight. They’re a staple feature of Georgian architecture, a style of building we developed a great deal of affection for during our time in London.

You’d be hard pressed to find a Georgian door with translucent glass inserts for example, but the simple black paint on it takes us back to a simpler time. Not necessarily a happier time – the here and now is pretty great with our three little boys rewarding us in ways we could never have imagined as a child-free couple in London. But it does take us back to time of carefree happiness, and allows us to emotionally connect our future happiness to that we experienced long ago on the other side of the world.

I was so happy when I saw it, that I felt like dancing…a bit like this other British PM:
