The right choices

One of the enjoyable things about writing this blog is that I am occasionally contacted by readers. Some seek advice, others simply say thanks for writing something that has helped them, and then very occasionally, there’s a reader that regales me with their own trials and tribulations from their build.

When that happens, it warms the cockles of my heart.

This isn’t a perverse case of schadenfreude. It’s more that hearing someone else’s mixed emotions from building their forever home makes me feel less alone in this world.

If you are about to embark on your own home building journey, I would bet all the money in my pocket – though my pocket is quite empty these days – that you will feel these same mixed emotions at various points in your build.

A reader of this blog, CC, is building her very own Waldorf 50. CC shared her frustrations, her uncertainty on whether she and her husband made the right choices along the way, and also whether they allowed their budget to blow out by just that little bit too much.

All emotions that Annie and I have experienced along the way.

Like us, CC has questioned the wisdom of her colour selections. Whether they were too safe, too muted. I don’t think so; her kitchen and bathrooms look fabulous.

Interestingly, I’ve written to her saying essentially the same thing and she has kindly assured me that our choices look great.

Perhaps we are all simply prone to second guessing ourselves. Not realising that there is no correct answer when it comes to choosing your tile, or colour of your cabinets.

CC did however share one photo which left me with that stone cold feeling of a ball that was well and truly dropped:

A bath niche!

Why didn’t we think of that?! So simple. So elegant. So practical!!!

For me, this is a great example of thinking ahead about how you will live in the home. More mental energy should be expended in thinking about this prior to locking in your choices. Happy planning 😊
