Pleasingly for me at least - because it’s my favourite space in any house - the kitchen is starting to take shape with the installation of the cabinets. This is what the kitchen designer drew: And this is how it’s looking thus far: The shaker style cabinet doors did not disappoint! Shaker style cabinets are … Continue reading Kitchen cabinets
Sofa shopping – a tale of two stores
With the build going so well, we have started to turn our energy towards selecting furniture. Annie, disengaged for much of the build since it became clear that we couldn’t afford a level of finishing that she had hoped for, is now once again in the driver’s seat. My input in this arena is largely … Continue reading Sofa shopping – a tale of two stores
Juliet balconies
The final element of our facade was installed this week: the Juliet balconies. Or perhaps more accurately, the Juliet balustrades. There is no balcony in any way shape or form. They are a purely decorative balustrade. But they are a decorative addition that took Annie’s breath away. She absolutely loves them. Hopefully the dark of … Continue reading Juliet balconies
Tour de house
We took a tour of the site together earlier this week. It was the first time that Annie has visited the site, and the construction has been going for about six months now! Needless to say that she was very excited to see the progress in person. And what progress! First up, we now have … Continue reading Tour de house
Does that look 90% complete to you?
First, the good news: internal linings are done! It is incredibly exciting to see the internal walls go up and start to better delineate the spaces that we hope to create many happy memories. The completion of internal linings triggers a progress payment to Eden Brae. Our contract stipulates progress payments at these pre-defined points:Contract … Continue reading Does that look 90% complete to you?
That ain’t gonna fit
While on a run to fight the inherently sedentary lifestyle that has been forced upon us by COVID-19, I came across a rather peculiar sight: Don’t get me wrong, there isn’t anything peculiar about gyprock being delivered to a building site. But what was curious was the size of the sheets vs the window they … Continue reading That ain’t gonna fit

Big brother moves inside
With the exterior almost entirely complete, Eden Brae had their spy cam - I mean, Build Watch camera - moved inside the house. We will now have a daily view of our future living, dining and kitchen area. I’m excited!
It’s what on the inside that matters
Last week was the first time I had met our site manager Mark in person. And, despite being almost six months into the build, was also the first time I saw the inside of the build. It was just something that I never got around to, and as the exterior was making good progress, not … Continue reading It’s what on the inside that matters
Safety in numbers
While going on a walk around the neighbourhood to break up the monotony of COVID-19 enforced home isolation, I passed a nearby house that I had long admired. Like our future home, this house has window mouldings and Juliet balconies. What I noticed for the first time today though, was that this house too has … Continue reading Safety in numbers
