The icing on the cake

What difference a few simple touches can make!

In much the same way that icing can lift a cake from tasty to delicious, the decorative mouldings on our facade have really given the house a pop.

Before mouldings:

Also, the first floor bricks have been cleaned revealing the sandstock bricks in all their characterful glory.

And after mouldings:

The mouldings aren’t entirely finished – they have yet to complete the framing around all the windows. The mouldings also need to be painted but from memory we chose Surfmist which shouldn’t look too far different from the off white that they come in.

Just like too much icing on a cake can tip it over the edge of deliciousness, I now worry that the final touch on the facade – the Juliet balconies – could tip our facade over the edge of tasteful and into ostentatiousness.

I take comfort in James Treble’s words on the matter, “Your house is fairytale without being too Disney,” he told me at the start of this journey. Let’s hope he’s right.
